What are the benefits

Meshlocals offer many advantages compared to usual and ordinary internet-style networks, talking about resiliency, robustness and security.

Resiliency

Such networks are scalable and run from the close neighbour range up to the global scale. In case of severe crisis, they allow to maintain an emergency communication infrastructure even if the centralized ordinary internet is unreachable due to some outtage. Thank to the citizen-to-citizen approach of the mesh infrastructure, they are also really resistant to central censorship, surveillance, and, are close to be untakedownable.

Robustness

The mesh routing constantly and efficiently routes data from node to node, and any route can be recalculed whenever needed to make sure communicating devices' users can rely on the network medium. In case of partial internet outtage, it takes no more extra step than to unplug the meshlocal router from the failing ISP box to have it automatically regaining internet connectivity trough any other mesh station at range that would still have some, and then using the router's wifi hotspot ability (and/or its Ethernet sockets), some home device can then be connected throught it.

Security

The approach of meshlocal setups involve to enable overlay networks, like Yggdrasil, on them. With near-to-zero configuration, any client device, like a computer, in the home LAN, can then also use Yggdrasil to authenticate and to secure its communication with the help of crypographic adressing and transmissions. Then, any machine will forever be known by an Yggdrasil IPv6 Address that will stay forever the same and can be transfered someday to a future machine when the need is here. This address can be used for numerous purpose, like using it just like a VoIP phone number to initiate visio calls, send files, or text message, with any VoIP suite like the (cross-platform) Linphone that has the ability to work over an IP adress with a de-NATed design in mind.
